The design process for this project was particularly complex. Each design feature was methodically considered to ensure a coherent relationship with the traditional features of rest of the house. Situated in a rural location, the house also had stunning views of the surrounding countryside. As such, the layout of the kitchen had to ensure these could be taken advantage of. However, once the design was finalised, the work itself only took 5 weeks in total – 3 weeks for prep work and 2 for installation.
This kitchen was originally two rooms. Undertaking the building work ourselves, we knocked down a wall and levelled the floor to create a large, functional space. In addition, we plastered and installed new electrics.
Oak is a prominent material in this kitchen, having been chosen for the worktop to match the dining table. Providing warm tones and a tactile surface, the oak is a pleasant contrast to the lighter-coloured cabinets. As a family room, lots of storage has been built in. Mirrors have been placed at the backs of cupboards to give the illusion of space and to reflect light. The star attractions of this kitchen, though, are the two lights hanging above the island. These were designed by a local artist.
