Lots of our clients have kitchens designed with dinner parties, good conversation and social gatherings in mind – which makes perfect sense as kitchens have become the social hub of our homes. Such designs, accompanied by good food and drink, make for incredible spaces to make new memories.
Here, our team give our top tips on kitchen layouts for dinner parties and how you too can have a space for cooking, relaxing, entertaining and pleasing the whole family:
A kitchen layout should take into account how you will use the space and ensure there is a clear area for food preparation, separate to where people will congregate and chat. This can be achieved in even small kitchens and will enable you as a host to concentrate on the recipe whilst your guests relax.
To give the areas a distinctive role, change the colour or material of the work surface so it’s best suited for the purpose. Depending on your tastes this could be a stave oak seating area with a quartz top for food preparation.

Always popular and a highlight of modern kitchens, islands are fantastic for dinner parties as they provide a central point for guests to gather, looking inward in conversation. As a result, everyone feels included and it relieves some of the stress of hosting before you’re ready to serve.
Islands can be made bespoke to have leg room for seating, charging points for phones, integrated sinks, and shapes to make the most of your kitchen space. By having this space in the kitchen and not in a separate dining room, you also benefit from not missing any of the fun.
Smart lighting points
Lighting can be versatile and helps set the mood for dinner parties, as well as creating more natural lighting throughout the day. Consider rise and fall ceiling lights that are both stylish and practical, as well as talking points for guests. Scattered lighting throughout the kitchen – under cabinets, across skirting boards – will set the mood and give you more options to adjust the atmosphere.
Lighting can also work in your favour to create a central point in the kitchen, such as an island, so guests have an intuitive area to mingle as they arrive. Furthermore, dimmer switches are a brilliant way to custom your lighting, depending on the time of your party.
We work with a number of leading suppliers to bring you the latest technology for kitchens, including smart fridges, touch-free taps, and worktops that charge smartphones.
For dinner parties, the latter is a brilliant feature, especially if music will be playing on a mobile device. In the modern day, people do worry about losing battery life when they’re out, so this is another way everyone can relax.
Touch-free taps are also incredibly practical and will make your kitchen more hygienic when there are a large number of people visiting.
